Is the spike detachable? I'm thinking of a down light situation.

Yes, the spike is held on by 2 Phillips screws and also functions as a strain relief for the wire. You can put a note at checkout and we will put a flat plate in it's place before shipping. It will take some creativity on your part to use it as a down light since there are no connection points on the underside of the light.
